Third place in the students idea competition for the redesign of a community square
The village square that is currently used as a parking lot is to undergo a redesign. The municipal council has therefore decided to initiate a closed design competition - in collaboration with Dr. Stefan Strack of the Institute for Construction Economics and Project Development in the Department of Architecture, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture at the University of Kassel - in order to incorporate creative ideas in the spatial and urban design of the square.
Integrated spatial concept (e.g. materials, details, lighting, vegetation, spatial relations, accessibility, uses)
Construction costs estimation in accordance with DIN 276 (3rd level)
Submission of presentations as a booklet (DIN A4 portrait format) and two plans (DIN A1 landscape format)
Digital submission of all the above in PDF format on DVD
Construction phase: 2010 - 2012
Architects: Schmidt & Strack, Alsfeld
Implementation with details of the winning submissions, such as water element, sandstone walls, bus stop
Establishing meeting spaces for different social groups
The concept aims at improving the use of the planning area as an active community square. Reorganizing and defining the site into different areas (and levels) enables the implementation of meeting spaces for different kinds of user groups. A water fountain will encourage further play activities. In order to save community budget, it is recommended to use local materials or to reuse existing materials wherever possible.
